Many high-traffic public health clinics can be dehumanizing places. Our goal was to create a one-story building with easy access for first-time visitors and the disabled.

In order to reduce this 62,000-square- foot health department to a human scale, two major corridors divide the building into four quadrants, with four major entrances. Each entrance leads directly to one of the quadrants occupied by health providers. Each health provider entrance and hallway is highlighted by an interior skylighted submall.

These buildings are designed to serve as local police facilities and community centers for their neigh-borhoods. Designed to promote the city’s Community-Oriented Policing concept, the centers are also equipped with emergency power and computer connections to function as local emergency management centers.

They are made available to the public for community functions that promote safety, education and public awareness.
